Despite being rather cautious, and my broker very pessimistic, i think there are some optimism due for PCI.

PCI manufactures PCB board as well as perform electronics contract manufacturing.. alot of their contract are from telecommunication devices..

from results of other contract manufacturers like omni ind, jit, natelect.. don't see why this company will not do well!

like its holding company 'chuan hup' (which superbull always tried to recommend), the result will be announced before end of the month. the interim result suggested increase over past year performance, and by the going of Omni Ind, I'd think the increase for 2nd half this year can be significant!

the historical PE ratio is ard 22 or 23 times (din calculate cos of today's slight surge), but i think the soon to be announce result will lower that significantly!

another way of owning the share is thru chuan hup, which some1 else has been mentioning.. but if electronics is to be played, i think pci is definitely more exciting!

anyway my broker is pessimistic.. but rumour is that electronics will fall next week whereas the wooden door maker (whatever the name is) will rise! trade at your own risk.

PCI - Symmetric brkout (Objective tgt. of 24 cents from brkout point).
Hi mdfa, if u've read my last wk postings.
1. Among all sectors, I'm having much brighter views on Electronics (last mentioned of ASA, Datapulse, Serial, Gul Tech....).
2. And if u hav seen charts on ASA, Datapulse etc, there will be not much a difference in views as to PCI too. (thou' I do agree that quite a no. of Sesdaq 'pennys' also presented such pattern).
3. Back to wat u would like to know, it is now targeting towards approx. $0.94 in near-term.

Bottomline : Buy, but strictly do not use the mind of contra.

Warr thanks again. Most likely i will pick this counter for mid term as you won make much profits form contra. I assume most investors are bullish after visited stock talk.

My guess, there will be a rally on monday but slow down on tuesday due to announcement on 24 Aug. by Alan G. On the other hand, i assumed that some of the stocks already absorbed prior announcement. Still undecided to go in as we are not sure on the market direction.

Freeier,

From SES Closing Report by Business Times:

"The top percentage gainer was electronics counter PCI, which rocketed up on market rumours that significant shareholder Chuan Hup is selling out. PCI's shares added 12.5 cents or 17 per cent at 84.5 cents on volume of 14.2 million while Chuan Hup rose five cents to $1.35 with 2.5 million units done."

PCI announced that they will be releasing their result next Monday after 5 p.m.

Hope the above info may be of some help.

[I would have thought that Chuan Hup's share price should increase more than PCI's?]

What a splendid result. EPS of 5.86cts per share :

The Group achieved a record profit of $10.1 million for the financial year ended June 1999. This represents a strong jump of 77.6% compared to the previous year. The turnover was $118.7 million (1998: $90.7 million), an increase of 30.8% over the previous year. Net tangible asset per share increased from 23.32 cts to 28.36 cts bringing the shareholder's equity to $49.1 million and earnings per share to 5.87 cts for the year.

Operating profit increased by 77.6%. This rise in profit was due to strong global demand for contract manufacturing resulting in an increase of 39% growth over the previous year. Commodities manufacturing also contributed 9.5% of the profit before tax. Other contributing factors were an increased efficiency in manufacturing, favourable currency exchange rates and short term investment income.

As of 30 June 1999, the Group has accumulated cash and short term investments of $27.4 million with no bank borrowings. The Group has set aside $10 million for investment in new production lines for the next two years, which will increase production capacity by approximately 30%.

During the year, the Group achieved ISO 9001 certification. ISO 9002 certification was obtained in 1994.

I should be smiling.. I think the fact that they are zero debt and they are keen to invest a fair chunk of their cash reserve to new lines is encouraging...

lets hope this fellow can break its recent high and scale back it previous heights of 2+ $.. (i think that's what it was years back)..

ING calls a Buy on PCI

Singapore, Sep 20 -- ING Barings has initiated coverage of PCI Ltd with a Buy recommendation.

The brokerage says that PCI is no ordinary contract manufacturer as its product mix allows it to enjoy higher operating margins of 5.5 percent compared to most other CMs. The company achieved a turnaround by returning to its core business focussing primarily on the production of LCD modules and PCBAs for telecom and mobile data devices, says ING.

With a healthy balance sheet and net cash position of about $11mln, ING is expecting PCI's earnings to grow at a compounded rate of 25 percent over the next three years. The broking firm says the stock is trading at FY2000 PER of 10.7 times but believes there is potential for PE expansion. It is looking at a price target of $1.33 or 18 times FY2000 earnings.

PCI to wind up Scotland operations and transfer to Batam

SINGAPORE (AFX-ASIA) - PCI Ltd said an application has been filed to wind up its Scotland unit, PCI (UK) Ltd.

PCI said it decided to wind up PCI (UK) as it was not cost effective to continue operations in Scotland.

It added that PCI (UK)'s manufacturing activities will be transferred to its plant in Batam to achieve greater economies of scale and better quality control.

PCI added that as part of the ongoing exercise to focus and streamline its operations, it will be taking steps to wind up another subsidiary, PCI Electronics (Kunsan) Co Ltd, which is a dormant
company.

The company added that the winding up of the two units is not expected to have any material effect on its net tangible assets and earnings per share for the current financial year.

DBS IOL on PCI

PCI Ltd, one of Singapore's oldest contract electronics manufacturers, which will be a beneficiary of the global outsourcing trend.

The company is a niche manufacturer of liquid crystal display or LCD devices, as well as printed circuit board assemblies, mainly for telecommunications handsets and mobile digital products.

The group's management sees sustainable growth of 20 to 30 percent over the next two years, and has plans to invest S$10 million to boost production capacity by 30 percent over the next 16 months. It is also seeking joint ventures to acquire new capabilities.

PCI has a net cash position of about S$11 million and a return on equity of 23 percent for FY99.

Earnings are expected to grow at a compounded rate of 25 percent over the next three years and the stock is trading at about 11 times FY2000 earnings, extremely cheap for a contract manufacturer.

This may be due to its less than illustrious history, as the company suffered significant losses back in 1995 and 1996.

However, with a new management team now in charge, a re-rating of PCI could be on the cards.

Switch some Chuan Hup to PCI

PCI is 36% own by Chuan Hup.

Why i brought PCI
1) Strong turnaround since 95.
2) is a CM stock.
3) NO bank borrowing.
4) Co confident of FY00 results.
5) forecast EPS of $0.92, 50% up from FY99's $0.59
6) Joint-Venture to be announced soon.
7) Potential to be the next Venture.

PCI Technical Analysis

PCI is in the triangle formation. It's testing the downslope with upslope providing strong support.

PCI needs to cross $0.86 on high volume in order to breakout of the bullish triangle. The target of this breakout will be $1.36, more than 50% upside.

This could happen on 11/11/99. Get ready.

3) NO bank borrowing.
(P.S. This is not directed at the company or the contributor....)

We always feel good when we are not in debt, so is the same for company.

But some bank borrowing may be good. 2 reasons (personal opinion plus some facts):

1) For a firm intending to expand, there are 3 sources of fund.

a) Retained earning: the cost is the opportunity cost of interest earning lost, which is not tax deductible.

b) Issue more equity: the cost is the dividend payable (though not compulsory, but is necessacry to make some shareholders happy), which is also not tax deductible.

c) Borrow from banks: the cost is the interest to be paid, which is tax deductible.

Hence borrowing from banks lower the taxible income of the firm, thereby rising its after tax profits. Funny isn't it, that your after tax income is higher as you borrow more?

2) I believe that b4 lending to a particular firm, the bank will have a good check on the company. Meaning: if a bank is willing to lend to a firm, it shows that they have faith in the standing of the firm. If the bank can reach this opinion of the firm, shouldn't we?

Having said that, me not saying that a firm with no bank borrowing is not good, that the banks have no faith in them. Maybe they choose not to borrow, that's all.

The thing is we have to look at the picture as a whole, not in parts.

But me also prefer bank with no bank borrowing.

Just come personal opinions...
--cheers!!--

PCI's joint venture involves chip-on-glass & chip-on-flex. This technology is so advanced that none of the local company has. Not even Venture or Nasteel Electronics according to reliable source.

PCI - After a disppointing closing yesterday, closed today at 0.91 up 0.06 on high volume of 12957.

Bullish triangle broken on high volume. Breakout target at $1.36.

PCI is an CM stock with lots of potential. It turnaround strong after lossing $22m in 95. It made $10.1m for FY99. I expect 1hfy00 net earning to be $6m and 2hfy00 to be $10m, totalling $16m for fy00. EPS forecast for FY00 is therfore 0.092, however DBS IOL estimate at 0.07X.

I am more optimistic. As, Chuan Hup's rally has consolidate at $1.90 to $1.94, now I believe it is PCI turn to carry on the Mother's run. (Chuan Hup holding 36% of PCI)

It's next resistance is at 0.955, year high. That resistance could be break through next week.

Yes, I am aware that you are almost married to PCI now, after having gotten enough of Chuan Hup, whom you were married to once a long time ago. Indeed, I was also monitoring PCI for some time after having missed Chuan Hup and couldn't bring myself to enter as the counter went higher and higher on each passing day. Hence, my close observation of PCI (which I suppose was the next best thing). If you visit my homepage, you will see that I was in PCI about 2 weeks ago, but that was premature as the volume could not support a true breakout. Made some money on exit, but not enough as it was a false signal.

My views? I supppose the answer must be measured over a time factor. It will be sometime before Funds are allowed to pick up the share. On the short run, I reckon it will face severe resistance at the dollar mark.

10+ reasons why PCI is a buy

1. PCI Ltd, a contract manufacturer in the growing telecom industry. US fund is very comfortable buying cm stocks. Capital Group, a US fund, holds Venture mfg, Natsteel eln, JIT, Omni ind, all cm stocks.

2. PCI only Singapore-listed CM to be certified with ISO 9001 (for design).

3. PCI plans to invest $10m to raise production capacity by 30% in the next 2 years.

4. About two thirds of PCI's FY99 revenue comes from the telecoms sector, which is also expected to maintain strong growth.

5. Under the new CEO Steve Manning and Chairman Peh Kwee Chim, CEO of Chuan Hup, PCI's management has turned the group around through a strategy of returning to its core business.

FYPre-taxTurnoverAft-taxEPS
30/6/95 5.675 245.189 3.598 0.021
30/6/96 -23.053 127.326-21.942 -0.127
30/6/97 -8.608 68.528 -9.030 -0.052
30/6/98 5.570 91.702 5.702 0.033
30/6/99 10.269 118.723 10.118 0.059

6. RIM, which is one of its customers from the telecom business, is likely to involve PCI in the production of 3G (third generation) cellular handsets which will go into production in late 2000 or early 2001.

7. PCI expects to invest S$20 to S$30 million in a joint venture to produce chip-on-glass and chip-on-flex technology. These technologies involve direct semiconductor chip attachment to the LCD glass or flex PCB substrates. This is a space and power saving technique required in next generation handsets and mobile devices which will cram more features and functionality into existing form factors.

8. PCI is also collaborating with a US company, Colorado Micro Displays, to manufacture next generation advanced micro-displays. These micro-displays comprise headsets project images for viewing from a notebook or handheld device directly in front of the eye. PCI will leverage on its core expertise in LCD technology to produce these microdisplays. The company expects to be the exclusive manufacturer of these devices when production begins in mid-2000.

9. PCI also plans to list its 50 percent owned Cranzoe Investment, the holding company of Polymicro, in 2 years' time. This could in turn boost PCI's market value and become a source of cheap funds to be used for future expansions and acquisitions.

10. From a technical viewpoint, the stock is still in a bullish mode as it is still trading within an established uptrend channel.

11. PCI is affordable and value for money. It's PER is only 15.4 compare to the other which is in the 40's. Below is a comparison based on 12 Nov 99 closing price.

Stock, EPS, Price, PER,
PCI, $0.059, $0.91, 15.4,
Omni Ind, $0.042, $1.91, 45.4,
JIT, $0.085, $3.46, 40.7,
Natsteel Eln, $0.160, $7.45, 46.5,
Venture Mfg, $0.318, $15.70, 49.3

If contract mfr PER is 40, then PCI stock price should be value at $2.40

12. Breakout of the bullish triangle on 12 Nov 99 at $0.86 on high volume, 12,957,000 ,7% of the 172,270,000 total share. It even managed to close at $0.91, day high. Target for the triangle breakout is $1.36, 50% gain from $0.91.

13. Director is confident of FY00 result as stated in the annual report. Baring INC forecast the FY00 EPS to be $0.074. PER is 12.3, extremely low for contract manufacturer. However, I am more optimistic. My estimate for FY00 earning is $16m, 50% increase from FY99, with 1H earning at $6m. EPS estimate to be $0.092, PER 9.9.

14. DBS IOL recommends a buy on PCI on ChannelNewAsia.

15. PCI has $27.4m cash and short-term investments with no bank borrowing.

16. Nasdaq record high closing is pushing technology stocks higher. Local technology stocks
which is lagging behind will be re-rate. US fund is very comfortable buying cm stocks. Capital Group, a US fund, holds Venture mfg, Natsteel eln, JIT, Omni ind, all cm stocks.

17. STI breakout of bullish triangle. Target of breakout is 2400. Bull run confirmed. STI likely to test 2200 this coming week.

Summary
PCI is an affordable contract manufacturing stock and is value for money, with very good potential. If you miss Venture mfg 6 years ago, Natseel eln 1 year ago, JIT and Omni ind 6 months ago, don't miss PCI again.

It's a gem waiting to be discover.

I've uncovered it, the rest is up to you.

On 12 Nov 99, PCI closed at $0.91 up $0.06 on high volume, 12957.

PCI up 0.035 to close @ $0.945 on 14,322 lots.

Stock change close EPS PER
PCI +0.035 0.945 0.05916.01
Omni Ind +0.19 2.10 0.04250.00
JIT +0.18 3.64 0.08542.82
NEL +0.25 7.70 0.16048.12
Venture +0.50 16.20 0.31850.94

With other CM stocks trading at PER of 40 to 50, PCI is still @ unbelievable 16.
PCI may have failed in 95/96, but it's turning around strongly. Give them a chance.

Do you know that PCI has only 172,260,000 shares and Chuan Hup is holding 36.57%, 63,000,000. Look at last friday, 12,759,000 and today, 14,322,000 transaction.

Do we have to wait until a US fund to come in and tell us what to buy?

This is a gem, polish it well and wait for an admirer. I'm ready, what about you?

Bull_run, sorry for the late reply.

Bull_run: when do you think $1.36 will be reached ?

superbull: I don't know. But PCI is worth more than $1.36. To value a stock, take their earning growth as a guide. If PCI CAGR is 25% for the next few years, the fair value for the stock will be 0.059 (EPS) * 25 (PER) = $1.475.

Silverbullet, sorry for the late reply.

Silverbullet: At PE 20, the price is near $1.20. So I put the bet on this price. At least I see a more realistic near term price range. Any higher, I really got no comment. Superbull, what do u think ?

superbull: PCI is set to benefit from the increasing trend toward global outsourcing and the underlying growth in the electronics sector which is estimate to be 30%. You can therefore value the stock at PER 30, that's to say that PCI has the potential to reach 0.059 (EPS) * 30 (EPS) = $1.77. Look at other cm stock, their PER is 40 to 50 and they never disappoint the market. The US countepart PER is even higher. That's why Capital Group brought all the CM stocks: Venture, NEL, JIT, Omni Ind. But because PCI market cap is only $162m, they are restricted. Watch out once PCI market cap crosses $300m.

PCI closed @ 0.95 up 0.05 on 3512 lots.

Whether PCI can breaks 0.98 will depend on DJ performance after the FED FOMC meeting tonite. DJ @ 10:56 is 10816 up 55.

It may take some time to break 0.98, now that the play in on property.

I'm looking to buy on dip.
