Here is my take on US markets and STI
Nasdaq is currently still a star performer and is likely to show some weakness before proceeding upwards again and for Dow very likely is going to trade sideways with occasional flirting with the 9000 level, once the converging lines are broken, it is very likely to resume where it is going, that is upwards.

Looks like I am well ahead of most analysts! Which is a good thing!

DJ MARKET TALK/SG: U.S. Q2 Capex Rise Good For Asia
Source : Dow Jones 01/08/2003 12:07
[Dow Jones] Strong annualized 7.5% growth in U.S. spending on equipment and software, revealed in last night's U.S. 2Q GDP data, is good news for Asian tech exporters; it was sharp rebound from 4.8% drop in Q1 and third time above 6% in past four quarters. This being taken by many analysts as sign that U.S. business investment cycle has turned - meaning economic recovery likely sustainable. (AYY,AXT)

Tonight CNA sure say this:

"STI recovered slightly at the end of day when news of N Korea agreement to join talks on Nuclear Crisis, leading to reduction of tension in North Asia"

Like real

======================================

North Korea agrees to talks
North Korea has accepted six-way talks on the nuclear crisis, South Korean officials and media have confirmed.

Washington has been pushing for multilateral talks to ensure the strength of any future agreement aimed at shutting down North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Pyongyang had long insisted the talks take place solely between itself and the United States.

DJ Singapore/Econ Survey -3: Jun Trade Data Beat Forecasts

04/08/2003 11:47

Singapore's key non-oil domestic exports beat forecasts to surge 18.7% in June, a sign the trade-dependent nation's economy is recovering from temporary setbacks due to SARS and the war in Iraq.

The economic survey to be issued Aug. 11 will reflect the actual data for the April-June period.

The June trade data suggest the economy is likely to have a strong rebound in the current half and is on track to meet the government's forecast for 0.5%-2.5% growth in 2003.

The country's economy grew 2.2% last year.

DJ Singapore Jul PMI 51.4% Vs Jun 50.8%; Elec Subindex 52.1%
Source : Dow Jones 04/08/2003 22:30

SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Singapore's Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 51.4% in July from 50.8% in June, signaling a continued rebound in manufacturing activity following the end of the local SARS outbreak in late May.

According to data issued by the Singapore Institute of Purchasing & Materials Management Monday, the PMI held above the threshold 50% mark for a second month in July, following three consecutive months of contraction.

An index reading above 50% indicates the manufacturing sector is expanding, whereas a reading below 50% indicates a contraction.

The institute also said the electronics subindex of the PMI was higher at 52.1% from 49.7% in June.

The increases in the overall PMI and the electronics subindex were mainly due to a rise in new factory orders and employment, the institute said.

The overall new orders index rose 1.4 points to 51.9%, while the electronics new orders index increased 3 points to 53.3%, the institute said.

The overall new export orders index rose 0.4 point to 52.2% in July, while the electronics subindex shed 0.2 point to post a reading of 52.7%.

The index for overall production fell 1.7 points to 50.2%, while the electronics' production index increased 0.7 point to 53%.

The PMI and sectorial indexes, which are compiled by the institute, are a broad measure that take into account production, new orders, inventories, imports, employment, and prices of inputs. The PMI is an advance indicator of trends in manufacturing activity.

DATAWATCH-Singapore July PMI suggests modest manufacturing recovery-Citigroup
Source : AFX 05/08/2003 10:01
SINGAPORE (AFX-ASIA) - Citigroup economist Sim Moh Siong said the 0.60 points rise in the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) to 51.40 in July suggests a modest recovery in the manufacturing sector.
"The general picture is that the manufacturing sector seems to be recovering. The good news is that the electronics index has rebounded, but the pace of recovery has been modest so far," he said.

Sim added that Singapore needs a stronger pick-up in global demand for its manufacturing sector to improve further.

"Singapore is an open economy and can do more with better external demand but in general, the outlook is improving but moderate," he said.

He forecasts 2003 GDP at 0.5 pct, the bottom end of the current government estimate of 0.5 to 2.5 pct growth.

"August" effect (Copyright: Believer)

The average August since 1985 has fared much worse than the average August before then. The average September since then also has fared worse, though the decline in its return has been less than in the case of August.
August is the month in which parents start scrounging through their assets in hopes of finding enough money to pay the increasingly high costs of both higher and secondary education in US.
