DJ MARKET TALK/SG: Jakarta Blast Has Regional FX Impact
Source : Dow Jones 05/08/2003 15:13 [Dow Jones] Implications of Jakarta explosion extends beyond Indonesia borders, unlike Philippine mutiny couple of weeks ago which was largely domestic issue, says BNP Paribas senior FX analyst Thio Chin Loo. Although unclear what caused explosion, it comes ahead of verdict in trial of suspected terrorist and "fear is that it is linked to it." Terrorists can strike anywhere, so "impact stronger," hence spillover effect on other Asia FX and stocks, especially those of Southeast Asia. (NIM) |

DJ MARKET TALK/SG: Jakarta Blast May Be By Suicide Bomber
Source : Dow Jones 05/08/2003 15:57 0757 GMT [Dow Jones] Indonesia police spokesman Zainuri Lubis confirms Jakarta explosion was bomb, while Jakarta governor says attack probably carried out by suicide bomber - if it was suicide bomb, this could increase terrorism fears in region by suggesting terrorists becoming even more fanatical. Still not clear, however, whether this was one-off attack or start of an extended campaign.(IMS) |

DJ Singapore Dlr Down Late; Hits 3-Mo Low On Jakarta Blast
Source : Dow Jones 05/08/2003 16:39 SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--The Singapore dollar was weaker late Tuesday, briefly dropping to a three-month low, after a blast outside a top Jakarta hotel sparked dollar buying on security fears across Asia, dealers said. At 0815 GMT, the U.S. dollar was quoted at S$1.7640, up from S$1.7587 late in Asia Monday. It traded between S$1.7600 and S$1.7660 intraday. A powerful bomb blast outside the Marriott Hotel in central Jakarta, an area that is home to many foreign embassies and businesses, killed at least eight people and wounded 69, authorities said Tuesday. The blast, which occurred around lunchtime, was "very likely" carried out by a suicide bomber, said Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso. News of the explosion sent the U.S. dollar shooting up to $1.7645 from around S$1.7620, and then to S$1.7660, its highest against the Singapore dollar since early May, dealers said. "There was a bit of reaction to the (Jakarta) news here, though I think there was a stronger response in some other regional currencies," said a Singapore-based dealer. The explosion, if confirmed to have been caused by a bomb, could renew fears of terrorist activity in the region, further hurting Southeast Asian economies still struggling to regain their footing. The U.S. dollar retreated slightly before the end of the Asian session as some market participants adjusted positions. But the U.S. currency appeared well-supported in the near term, and would extend Tuesday's gains if the blast was confirmed as an act of terrorism, dealers said. Overnight, the U.S. dollar is expected to trade between S$1.7600 and S$1.7680. (MORE) Dow Jones Newswires 05-08-03 0839GMT |

with such a sombre mood, many would be selling on fears ahead of the weekend. it's beyond the imagination what the JI might do if the verdict of the criminals in Jakarta is unfavourable. all it takes it another major bomb blast to severely rock the region.
on a brighter note who knows, after a few days of consec losses, sti may juz rebound with a National Day rally (everytime we anticipate eagerly it never happens) |

DJ SINGAPORE PRESS: Business Mood Improving - Survey
Source : Dow Jones 07/08/2003 08:29 SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--Although profits and new business orders continued to slide in the second quarter, businesses have become more upbeat about their prospects and see signs of an impending recovery by the fourth quarter, a survey conducted by the Business Times and the National University of Singapore shows. The business prospects net balance - the difference between the percentage of firms that are optimistic and those that are pessimistic - improved by 16 points to negative 21, from a previous level of negative 37, the Business Times reports. "It is surprising that (the gain in) business sentiment was so much," says Chow Kit Boey, director of NUS Consulting and associate professor at NUS Business School. "Business sentiment is still negative, but it is clear that companies are less pessimistic and gloomy," Chow says. Chow says based on recent economic data and the nature of economic cycles, the fourth quarter could "mark the start of the next economic expansion in Singapore." out of market for past two weeks...market too volatile...only hold UOB restruturing shares such as UOL, OUE etc...no losses so far though no big profits...but safe way to trade at this time...limited downside for these stocks but lots of upside...when market move up, they will drift up (but not a lot), when a market drift down they may not drift down...but waiting for the UOL, OUE buyback or restructuring news soon...if kena, will hit jackpot..think dateline near and UOB already hold 1.8 billions in cash for this exercise...also will confirm with US counterparts before shorting tech stocks....when to do that then? when Dow breaks below 9053 for 3 consecutive days and when Nasdaq break below 1650...will heavily short then if these come true...happy trading |

when to long or short?...when you see Dow below 9053 and Nasdaq below 1650 (uptrend line if broken will go all the way down to 1500 for Nasdaq and 8500 for Dow), you can safely short...when to long? is when you see October reaching...best buy of year is usually at October...be patient...but of course things will change but so far this strategy will hold well temporary...in between now to October market will be volatile then...remember if you are not more than 70% sure of making money forget about the market and take a break...else you will keep losing money if you adopt wrong strategy..remember share trading rule 1. Never lose money 2. Never lose money 3. Never lose money |

STI (Daily) - As expected, STI went into a wave-iv type of correction. It received support from the 50-day moving average as well as the up-side of the 3.5-year downtrend and rebounded. The rebound met resistance at the 10-day moving average.
At this moment it is difficult to tell whether correction has been completed. A likely scenario is for the index to be locked inside a trading range to mark time in order to wait for further development e.g. some improvement in earning?? Previous daily pix Previous weekly pix |
