NASDAQ (Weekly) - Instead of shooting all the way to the 2,000 level as envisaged, the NASDAQ has weakended considerable in the last few sessions. It dropped below the 10-week (or 50-day) moving average which is not a very good sign.

Let's hope it can consolidate above the few downtrend lines that it has broken out recently.

Reasons to be cautious on the STI

1. Leadership stocks are losing their momentum. The banks reported poor results which will cap short term gains. By the way the banks carries about 40% of the weightage in STI. The big caps tech stocks like Venture, St Sassembly, Creative, Chartered and TAC are struggling at current levels.

2. Volume is falling. Most of the volume is from in-trading of selected stocks.

3. Negative seasonality is here. 7 Month Ghost Month and the September effect affects sentiment.

4. Nasdaq and DOW are not offering leadership. Nasdaq looked toppish.

5. Our government just downgraded our growth forecast.

6. Local interest rates looked to have bottomed. Are we following the US interest rates? Warren Buffet cut it's bonds holdings. An ominous sign for interest rates. Our property sector will be the first to feel it.

7. On technical grounds, STI just broke the uptrend line(from end April to end July). STI looked like a DOUBLE TOP at 1600. It has negative divergence with regards to MACD and RSI(both with lower highs).

8. The number of insider selling has been on the rise. Normally this is a bad sign.

9.The spate of recent IPOs is draining away liquidity from the market.

10. The recent falls in the pennies stocks is beginning to hurt the retailers. They need to rest and regroup.

It is important that STI rebonds above 1545, failing which the chart will form a DOUBLE TOP, HEAD and SHOULDER.

Just my opinion

PS> Both NIKKEI and Hang Seng also broke their uptrend lines.

Over the weekend at National Day celebration dinners, some ministers hint that CPF may be tinkered with. Wat impact on STI????, as this is part of wage restructuring efforts...to make our manufacturing industries competitive again....hence preventing job losses.

The choices available are little. Weak S$, lower wage costs, lower fees/utilities or jobs LOST forever. Land costs need be brought down too, albeit slowly.

We cannot pass this problem, COMPETITIVENESS, onto future generations.

DJ MARKET TALK/SG: Banks Mostly Flat; Rising Rates To Help

11/08/2003 11:49

[Dow Jones] Banks mostly flat, though UOB (U11) +0.8% at $12.80, as expectations of higher mortgage rates keep investors tied to stocks despite downward revision of FY03 GDP target. DB says Singapore banks on brink of raising lending rates especially mortgage rates following rise in interbank rates; rise in lending rates very positive for banks' profitability especially for banks that are large net lenders in interbank market. Also, competition from foreign banks declines when interbank rates rise. Expects DBS (D05), flat at $11.00 to benefit most from rising rates. OCBC (O11) flat at $10.80.(ANU)

Skyfox,

This is because when you sold the counter there is one less person giving it pressure therefore less gravity holding the price down. Don't keep thinking it that way or else it will happen virtually all the time.

Walmart sales up 11% and profit up 21%. Walmart turnover is well over 250 billion.

Retail up for 3 months in US and went un-noticed.......Creative types will be a beneficiary.

Morgan Stanley Advises Putting More Money in Singapore Shares

Aug. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Morgan Stanley is recommending that investors put twice as much money in Singapore stocks than what is recommended by the Morgan Stanley Capital International Inc.'s All Country Asia-Pacific Free ex-Japan benchmark. The world's second-biggest securities firm said in a report published Monday that investors should increase their holdings in DBS Group Holdings Ltd. and United Overseas Bank Ltd., the island's two largest lenders, because they're expected to benefit from rising consumer spending as companies boost hiring. compared with the 6.1 percent recommended by the MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan index. Money managers, who use MSCI to track their performances, normally allocate their funds according to weightings on those indexes. ``The prospect of renewed job growth combined with a Singapore consumer who has more buying power than at any time since the 1997 Asian crisis will serve as the catalyst for meaningful out-performance in this largely neglected market,'' the report said. Singapore's benchmark Straits Times Index had risen 8 percent in the first half of the year, slower than benchmarks in Thailand or Indonesia, which had gained 30 percent and 19 percent, respectively, in the period. A declining rate of bankruptcy filings since the beginning of the year, lower debt owed on credit cards and rising savings provide the basis for increased spending. With companies in Singapore expected to start hiring, that will spur consumption growth, the report added. MSCI compiles indexes and is majority-owned by securities firm Morgan Stanley.

This few days STI volume is higher than the ave 750mil ... I'm just thinking would the STI do something like it did in June when it was trying to surge above 1480 forcefully to break 1520. First initial break then retreat back to 1450, the 2nd time it broke forcefully above and stay above till Jakarta bombing's knee jerk reaction.

DJ MARKET TALK/SG: STI +1.1%; Crosses 1605 Cap
14 August 2003, 14:38

[Dow Jones] STI +1.1% at 1608.29, crosses recent high 1605, on hectic buying in blue chips and techs; DBS (D05) +4.2% at $12.30, Creative (C76) +10% at $9.60. "There seems to be no stopping the buyers. There is a dramatic change in the sentiment," says local trader, following rebound in local banks' home loan rates and rising hopes of economic recovery. But crucial for STI to close above 1600 for uptrend to sustain, he adds. Volume heavy at 1.06 billion shares; 200 gainers, 83 losers and 379 flat/untraded. (ANU)
