For everyone's info, there was only 2 Sept that suffer from a loss for Dow from 1990-1999, altho the consecutive Sept on 00,01,02 suffers a loss for Dow. So historically, Sept is a rally month if you want to look at things from the history point of view. |

better to take partial profit on chartered and datacraft...with 911 coming and US market up on low volume last week, better to play safe and take partial profit (may not be all) for safe part...do not let your profit run away..though market may still be up, lock in some profit first..do not be greedy |

Nasdaq Hits 17-Month High, as Tech Stocks Advance
By Katherine Meyer and Jennifer Saranow The Wall Street Journal Online Technology stocks pushed ahead Tuesday, as investors took in a new manufacturing report and some analyst upgrades, including encouraging comments for computer maker Dell. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 31.03 points, or 1.7%, to close at 1841.48, a 17-month high for the tech-heavy index. Morgan Stanley's high-tech index added 6.08 to 427.25, and the Nasdaq 100 Index of nonfinancial stocks gained 19.89 to finish at 1361.09. Total volume on the Nasdaq Stock Market was 1.77 billion shares. Advancers outpaced decliners: 2,249 to 998. Among some widely held tech issues: Microsoft rose 74 cents to $27.26, while Intel gained 15 cents to $28.74, both on Nasdaq. International Business Machines added $3.75, or 4.6%, to $85.76 on the New York Stock Exchange. Stocks initially rose after the opening bell Tuesday, but the rally briefly lost momentum following a report that manufacturing activity expanded for the second month in a row in August but employment continued to shrink in the sector. However, stocks picked up again toward midday, as Wall Street decided to focus on positive news following the Labor Day holiday. Investors found much to cheer about in tech land. Goldman Sachs analyst Rick Sherlund upgraded the software group to "attractive" from "neutral," citing improving U.S. economic conditions, signs of a bottom in Europe, and expected seasonal strength in the fourth quarter "followed by further improvement in [ information-technology] spending extending in 2004." Among software stocks to benefit, shares of PeopleSoft added 62 cents, or 3.4% , to $18.67. PeopleSoft late Friday officially completed its acquisition of J.D. Edwards. Shares of rival Oracle, meanwhile, tacked on 56 cents, or 4.4%, to $ 13.39, also on Nasdaq. Separately, Goldman analyst Laura Conigliaro upgraded Dell and Seagate Technology to "outperform" from "in-line," as part of her overall upgrade of the enterprise-hardware sector to "neutral" from "cautious." Shares of Dell gained 97 cents, or 3%, to $33.59 and shares of Seagate, which makes disc drives, added $1.54, or 7%, to $24.55, both on the Big Board. Elsewhere, shares of National Semiconductor gained 31 cents, or 1.1%, to $ 29.45 after an upgrade from Soundview Technology Group, which raised its rating to "outperform" from "neutral," citing an expected strong second half from the firm's wireless business. McLeodUSA rose 15 cents, or 13%, to $1.29 on Nasdaq. The telecom company agreed to a deal with Cisco Systems, where McLeod will offer services for digital-subscriber line with Cisco as the primary equipment provider. Shares of Cisco gained 45 cents, or 2.4%, to $19.59, also on Nasdaq. Shares of Overstock.com rose 58 cents, or 4.1%, to $14.83 on Nasdaq after the company said it is dropping prices on best-selling books to 25% off Amazon.com's pricing for the same books. Shares of Amazon, meanwhile, gained $1.01, or 2.2%, to $47.33, also on Nasdaq. [Dow Jones] Net outflows again from U.S. stocks last week of $516 million, with 4-week moving average continuing slide into negative territory, says UBS Warburg; "this supports our view net equity inflows are unlikely to recover to levels consistent with ongoing dollar strength." Slight outflow in continental Europe, though net inflows yet again into Asia-Pacific of $330 million; at $647 million, 4-week moving average for region still 2nd strongest reading since August 2001.(RXM)

Market is still range bound with not much uptick despite a strong overnite on Wall Street. Big players must have shorted big time and not expecting a strong September closing but what if after 911 and no terror strike? Would mkt still take-off? Generally September and October are laggard months for equities. Better be slow than sorry |

STI doing pretty well, but I guess that Singtel weightage on the index is pretty prominent dragging the STI down while causing sentiment dampen. |

Investors should ignore SingTel effect for awhile, otherwise always lead by the nose by others. I read a report that says 2 US biz groups going after SingTel for overcharging the data line rate... so ignore SingTel and dun get fool by its impact of STI. |

STOCKWATCH - Singapore tech stocks higher after Intel's improved Q3 forecast
05 September 2003, 11:42 SINGAPORE (AFX-ASIA) - Technology stocks were higher today after Intel, the world's largest computer chip maker, raised its sales forecast for the third quarter, dealers said. Intel raised the lower end of its expected revenue range for the third quarter to 7.60 bln usd from 7.30 bln, and held the top end of its range steady at 7.80 bln usd. Dealers said that the news from Intel, as well as an earlier comment from Cisco of better orders, should give a boost to local tech stocks. At 11.30 am, Chartered Semiconductor was up 0.01 sgd at 1.19, on volume of 16.129 mln shares. Creative Technology was up 0.30 at 18.40, Venture Corp was up 0.40 at 20.20, and ST Assembly was up 0.01 at 2.31. The Straits Times index was up 7.83 points at 1,618.06. "The general sense is that things are starting to look up for the tech industry," said DBS Vickers analyst Terence Tan. "If the local tech companies are able to maintain their pricing power, they should be able to improve their margins." (1 usd = 1.75 sgd) |
