Tonight US markets will observe some minutes of silence in commemoration of those victims in september 11. See story below.

U.S. financial markets will observe a series of moments of silence and trading interruptions on Thursday to commemorate the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks two years ago.

The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq Stock Market and American Stock Exchange will observe moments of silence at the following times, all Eastern:

8:46 a.m., when the first hijacked plane struck the North Tower.
9:03 a.m., the time the second plane hit the South Tower.
9:59 a.m., when the South Tower fell.
10:29 a.m., the time of the North Tower's fall.
The NYSE's opening bell will be rung by the spouses and families of the NYSE members and trading floor community who were victims of the Sept. 11 events.

The Amex, which lost ten of its members on Sept. 11, said it would remember the day with a special opening bell-ringing ceremony in honor of the New York firefighters who were killed.

Bond markets

The Bond Market Association (TBMA) recommended normal trading hours, suggesting moments of silence at 8:46 a.m. and 10:29 a.m. to mark the beginning and end of the terrorist attacks.

The recommendations apply to trading of U.S. government issues, mortgage- and asset-backed securities, over-the-counter investment-grade and high-yield corporate bonds, municipal bonds and secondary money market trading in banker's acceptances, commercial paper and Yankee and Euro certificates of deposit.

As a tribute to the hundreds of its members who died in the attacks, TBMA said a wall of video screens would scroll a list of the names of the victims at its New York headquarters from 8:46 a.m. until 10:29 a.m.

The bond industry lost more members than other groups because of the high concentration of bond professionals working in the World Trade Center, TBMA said. Cantor Fitzgerald, located on the upper floors in the North Tower, lost 658 employees.

Chicago Board of Trade

Trading on the Chicago Board of Trade will open as usual, with four minutes of silence to be held at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:59 a.m. and 10:29 a.m. A one-minute delay will take place in the exchange's agricultural markets, which will open at 10:31 a.m.

Chicago Mercantile Exchange

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange will observe normal trading hours and hold the same four minutes of silence at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:59 a.m. and 10:29 a.m. Trading on CME's GLOBEX electronic trading platform will also observe the same periods of silence.

New York Mercantile Exchange and New York Board of Trade

The New York Mercantile Exchange and the New York Board of Trade will both observe four minutes of silence to commemorate the victims of the tragedies.

Following the last minute of silence at 10:29 a.m., the markets will remain closed for another 21 minutes in memory of each of the members and former members of the two exchanges who died. Both exchanges will reopen at 10:51 a.m.

The New York Board of Trade moved into the NYMEX building on Sept. 2, 2003 because its headquarters were destroyed in the terrorist attacks. Traders worked out of the exchange's emergency backup facility until its move last week.

Metals trading on NYMEX will open as usual while energy trading will be delayed to 10:51 a.m. The weekly Energy Department natural-gas supply update will be issued 45 minutes late at 11:15 a.m.

The open for trading in cotton and sugar No. 11 on the NYBOT will be delayed a half-hour to 11 a.m. while trading in sugar No. 14 will open as usual.

Hi Xiung, I have almost cleared all my long position. But still thinking should I short.

Anyway, I will not be in front of the terminal the whole day for sure. At most a few more minutes. Given up hope on Singapore market already.

I read a report somewhere (forgot, but i think Nasdaq or Bloomberg) saying that generally fund managers in the States are "convinced" that the economy is getting better.

Holiday season is coming. Unemployment rates is better (although some other reports differ here)

Just take a notice whats been bringing the market down for the past few days, its 1 case of SARS and Sept 11 sentiment. All because of panic, nothing to do with economy.

Investeer, in general US markets perform relatively well in last quarter unless any major upsets will cause they not to.

Let me pour some cold water ....

If you die die must hold or still in bull mode .... things to consider
1) Prior to 911 and Sars, the mkt was already on a declining mode in fact 911 and sars contributed less than 50% of the drop from the high more like 10-30% only and therefore the mkt was able to push up
2) What happens if another terror attack in sept followed by more Sars cases in oct?? And given that the mkt had been on a bull chase for 4-6 months (depending on which mkt and your wave count starting either march or may). Therefore downside looks more than upside. Plus the recent run up was powered by tech and penny stocks which was previously speculative stocks, and still are now.

SO what is the downside risk?? 1600 - 1200 again ?? monthly data of course....

If you turn bearish and starts shorting, then you must be aware that there are die hard bull out there who hasn't earn enough and would not believe the mkt is going down assuming it is, they may still rush into the mkt or that punters have not undloaded yet so they may support the mkt or push higher to unload ... afterall if you don't push higher who would be buying it from you??? Then again they may decide to cut loss and get out town.

Eg did you notice norelco spectacular performance yesterday??? today no volume .....

Singapore shares closed lower yesterday, weighed down by concerns over the possible damage from the single SARS case just diagnosed and also caution over the looming Sept 11th date. The STI was clocked 13.43 points lower to 1566.71, dragged by some heavy selling of banks and index heavyweights. We expect the selling, some of it margin selling arising out of recent price falls, and this cautious sentiment to continue at least till the weekend, with the index likely to find support between 1,500 – 1,550, creating a buying opportunity once the dust settles.

Also, September is generally a down month for the US market.
Tough decision whether to let go or to hold, but certainly got to think twice about buying now. And to let go to cut-loss should the market deteriorate, with the view to buy back later when the market recovers. Good luck.

It is good time to pick up some good bargains... though not in a hurry!

The MACD (-0.15) and RSI (<20) are interpreted as oversold conditions, though there still may be some indigestion problems. But these are expected to clear away in a week or two.

So buyers who are able to Buy and Hold should see sunshine ahead as overbgts vs oversolds are neutralised, and then Papabull's forecast: Where the STI is expected to attempt the 1750-1800 level with better corporate figures for Q3 in the qrtly Oct reporting season for July-Sept session.

Papabull was on record under Market Intelligence thread to take profit when the STI hit 1630 on 19th August.

Good luck and grit your teeth as you buy... when the goings get tough, the toughs get going.

My fortune teller tells me don't buy shares nor sell shares in these last 2 trading days of the week and also next week, also don't trade. He says if hands itchy go wash yr hands. Then he also asked me to watchout "window" period for SARS victim in the next 20 days also don't know what he means so come 20 days fm yesterday, I shall watch out of the window see if I can see anything then I tell u all, okay
