XGod: Many thanks for your kind concern for newbies who have been collecting $$ during this bull run.
I am new - just started 2 months ago. Although I have not been through the crashes, but am very well aware that this is a minefield full of risks and surprises (both pleasant and not so pleasant ones). What is frustrating is that investments don't seem to bring in higher returns (and excitment), vis-s-vis bold punting on rumours. The added worry is that one tends to spend on easy money.

Many will be the new victims...absolutely no doubt about it! So I beg everyone to discern for the sake of your own future !!!

I was terribly upset last year when the market crashed and I lost a bundle. I was still green then and to make matter worse, my luck was down and I had never gone thru a real bear market. Luckily for me, I had made a tidy sum in the 1st half 02 before the crash occured in the later part. So my net loss was not that bad after all. Now after having heard the confessions from some of you, I feel that I was indeed quite blessed already. This year, I have already made enough (hard cash) to cover for my last year's loss, not including the paper gains that I am currently sitting on.

Lesson learnt for me is never to chase running stocks that have already gone way up. No contras, no shorts. Other stocks have gone way way up, let them be. Believe in my faith on the stocks that I have purchased and wait for their turns to move up, instead of cashing out and starting to run after other moving counters. Otherwise I may end up being the loser.

P.S. Even now I am still having to sacrifice my opportunity costs on some stocks in atoning for the mistakes that I made in the past. Hopefully one day I will have atoned for my mistakes.

I have gone through at least 5 bear markets and they are all the same - people dumped good stocks in panic only to benefit greatly those who are calm and patient. And I do look forward to more bear markets.

Mep: Those who have holding power (and who can afford not to panic and remain calm and patient) will benefit from the dumping.
I remember my dad used to buy properties and blue chips pre 1987 in HK to pass onto his children (me included). He didn't even bother to check on the daily movements at all and the scripts were kept in the safe. But after the black Monday, he taught us not to touch shares and put money on properties only. Yet even now, we do have good dividends from the HSBC shares that we inherited and then of course the share value has increased manifold since 1987. I'm not sure whether we could have made higher yields by selling these shares at high price and buying them back at lower price over these 20+ years.

Of course you can make money in a bear market lah. That is why Mep is looking forward to more as she had emerged a winner eventually in at least some, if not all, the 5 bear markets that she went through.

In this scenario, you require patience (real real one), not kan cheong, and then wait it out to collect stocks at lelong prices. And then HOLDDDDDDDDDDDD. Eventually you will be awarded the trophy. Why? Because no matter whatever happens in the world, the markets will always be there for you to sell later at your target prices. The question is when. Unless, of course, it's the end of the world. Then whatever it is, it doesn't matter anymore.

Of course, beside the LTBH strategy, you can also win it out in a bear market by playing ping pong ball (in a bear market, downtrend prices will get lower after retracing upwards with every big dip, that is, lower will get lower). Traders who play this game have to be very experienced and nimble: ka ka hoot to get in and ka ka hoot to get out, every movement very very chun, fast and hiong. I can safely say most of us here are not cut to compete in this challenge.

Those who are holding stocks, do not dump fundamentally solid counters, die die must also hold (provided of course you can hold). There is no change in the intrinsic values of these stocks, except the worsening of overall market sentiments that are being wrecked by the underperforming global economy. When the global economy is on the mend, the first stocks to react in the uptrend will be the counters with solid financials.

This is what I have learnt after going through one bear market last year, at a price. On hindsight, I think it is worth the price.

Me never went through any bear market b4. Now in the middle of baby bull market.. so me still learning from the gurus here...

Jos, I think opportunity cost is quite high if marni left in piggies. No doubt piggies fundamentals is super strong. But I notice in a bull run like dis one, tech(esp semicon) and marine stocks is leading the pack. I intend to shift some marni to Chartered when the correction period comes.. All the best lar. I join u back b4 CNY.. and slaughter the piggies once and for all

Amos, In a sustained bull market, everything will eventually run like crazy bulls in the rampage. Some will break the ice first and then others will follow. Everyone will have its day. This is good so people can rotate from stock to stock to win $ mah. Provided of course you know the right direction to head for lah. If all counters went up at the sametime, all of you would be charging madly in all directions and don't know which direction.

Most prices are running away now, it's risky to move from counter to counter, that's why I rather stay put for my counters to take their turns to do its bull dance.

The Sesdaq crash in July 1999 was an engineered one, IMO. No doubt it was a fully-inflated bubble but the burst was exacerbated by the coordinated efforts of xxxxxxxxxx. So-called support levels were easily broken with ease. Most investors were too stunned (and too slow to react) and in the end suffered tremendous losses. Those part-time traders who have a day job and hardly got the time to monitor were the ones to get hit the most.

Read and digest carefully. That's my advice.

"DJ Singapore, Malaysia Discuss SARS Contingency Plans
17 October 2003, 18:43

SINGAPORE (AP)--Singaporean and Malaysian health officials met Friday to plan for a possible fresh wave of severe acute respiratory syndrome cases as winter approaches, the government said.

The officials shared information about their contingency plans for a "northern winter resurgence of SARS" and agreed "there was a need to remain vigilant," a joint statement from the two health ministries said.

Equatorial Singapore fears that an outbreak during the cold season in the northern hemisphere could again be transported to the city-state by travelers, as it was in March this year. The virus that causes SARS, believed to have originated in China, can survive longer in the atmosphere at low temperatures.

Malaysia and Singapore promised to work together as they did during the first outbreak to share information and standardize health check protocols at checkpoints, the statement said. They will meet again in Kuala Lumpur in three months, it added.

SARS killed 33 people in Singapore, infected 239 and cost the economy about S$1 billion (US$1=S$1.7411)

Malaysia, which is separated from Singapore by a narrow causeway, was hit relatively mildly by the outbreak earlier this year, with two deaths among five patients, all of whom were infected outside the country.

About 50,000 Malaysians travel to Singapore daily for business and work. Health authorities in both countries had accused each other of being lax in carrying out health checks at the causeway at the height of the SARS outbreak earlier this year.

SARS killed SARS 774 people out of nearly 8,100 infections, mostly in Asia. The vast majority of cases were in mainland China and Hong Kong.

Waiting for a correction or bear mkt is always a costly affair. As we can't time the mkt it's reasonably logical to stay invested in a bull mkt, albeit one must exercise his/her own risk management. I've also gone through a few bear mkts, first being in 1987, but I can't say I'm now prepared for the next one, esp. if you look at 1999 that was, like Zero-1 said, an engineered phenomenon. There's no way to tell when it's coming though there may be tell tale signs (on hindsight) when trading restrictions were imposed. Anyway, let's ride this bull while it lasts but do keep both eyes and ears wide open as disaster usually strikes when least expected.
