STI Daily - The local market has been trying hard to build a base between 1220 and 1320 over the last two months in preparation for a major reversal. At least there is sign of the index trying to establish an uptrend. The reversal can be confirmed if we do not see new low in the next two to three months. Let's hope that the impending correction in the Dow does not derail the good work the index has done so far! Previous pics |

Dow - The Dow is making an attempt to break the wall at 8,500.
I doubt it can go very far from here because of the layers of resistance that I mentioned before. I am saying again that it will be quite unlikely to reach 9,000 in the near future. Previous pix |

SARS fear seemed to be subsiding in Singapore and in HK. Only China and Taiwan still gripped by SARS fear. Market could turn decidedly bullish next week. Good for those holding long for short term trading and bad for those like Telford who shorted CDL and DBS big time. I think badly battered bank and property stocks like DBS, CDL and Capitaland would benefit from the short term relief rally. But longer term direction will depend on how badly the Singapore and Asian economies have been hit by SARS but the impact of that too could be soften if US economy stage a strong rebound in the second half ot 2003. STI should test 1320 next week. |

With the signing of th FTA with US, Singapore exports such as electronic chips, textiles, etc to US will have an edge over countries from SE Asia, China, Taiwan. CSM Chips will be cheaper than Taiwanese chips when entering the US market. |

SESDAQ - Some people are concerned that our SESDAQ market is fast becoming a mini-bubble. But then I believe it all boils down to one's view-point and perspective. If we are comparing the current level with its previous low of about 40 seen just after 911, yes, I agree that the index has already moved up by more than 50%. But if we are looking at its previous high of about 195 seen in mid-1999, then the current level which is at a discount of more than 60% is undoubtedly a steal. So who do we believe? Well, if history were to repeat itself then, we should be looking forward to a once-in-five-year type of peak. And I got a feeling this may be coming at a time much sooner than many of us think!! Do you know how much each equipment for producing the chip cost? From diffusion/etch/photo/thinfilm/failure analysis. Each equipment can easily fetch a few million and worth much more with all the setup all done properly and fully utilised. Furthermore these equipment are not outdated equipment and are still capable of producing current technology of 0.13um. I wouldn't be surprised if there is some take over offer for CSM's fabs. Stock Price : 0.685 By Skyfox On Sunday, 16 Mar 2003 01:16pm [ Jade User ] Posting #61 (Viewing #62 of 97 Total) [ Bookmark ] [ Reply ] Hi Euclid, thanks for pointing this out. Interestingly, ASL chartering and rental revenue contribute about 1/3 of the total profit, with ship building and repair the other 1/3 each respectively. The shipbuiding and repair business plans appear more aggressive and could offset the rise in oil price in years to come. Nevertheless, chartering services contribute less than 1/3 of the gross profit. I would agree that ASL would probably worth a stag. But this counter can buy when dip. Stock Price : 0.215 |

NASDAQ - This is another bubble that people are worrying about! But somehow I am more comfortable with NASDAQ than with the Dow. Which do you think is easier to push: a moth ball or a cannon ball? To use some chartist's parlance: if it is able to clear 1,600 it should be aiming for 2,000! (People will say this is like stating the obvious!) Previous pix |

Wall St ends up
Dow component Intel rose 71 US cents to US$19.58 after the technology giant said it saw signs of an industry turnaround later this year, citing growth in the key China market. Nvidia surged US$5.31, or 33.1 per cent, to US$21.37 after the chipmaker reported quarterly earnings that beat estimates by a penny a share; it also gave an encouraging outlook for the next quarter. |

Good morning Osan
I am in agreement with you. I personally believe that the Nasdaq will outperform the Dow. The Nasdaq still has quite some way to go before it will exhaust it current uptrend. The question in every one mind will be "Is this a counter trend of the current down trend?" I do not know. All I have is to move along with the technicals. Currently, they are telling me it is a "GO". The first warning sign that this is not so will be at the 1913 price level. This is the 20% retracement objective of the downtrend from 5132 (Mar 10 2000) to 1108 (Oct 10 2002). From there on it will be the various Fibonacci retracement objectives. 38.2% 2645 50.0% 3120 61.8% 3595 As such, I will continue to be on the long side till further indication otherwise. Have a great weekend and profitable weeks ahead. Cheers atss |

I'm no chartist. But based on human behavior that never fails to exhibit the same panickly fear when market is reaching the bottom and the same greed when market is reaching the peak. People around me tells me that we all feel very gloomy and pessimistics about our future. Probably this is the worst feeling since the plungh started in year 2001.
That's when everyone is feeling bad, very bad, market starts to move before any concrete indicator - remember market is always 6 months ahead of our economy. When everyone realised the market has moved, 3 months would have gone pass. This pattern never fails. Our own leaders are also very good indicators - qualitative one 1) In last quarter of 2000, ministers annouced that the 2001 economy will reach 8% growth..without noticing the bubble. 2) And now they project for even slower growth.. one annouces, the rest just keep repeating the same message... and everyone feel so down.....as if they are sure right. But most of the times, they are wrong. Our market is negatively co-related to our leaders' expression of economy outlook.... I personally think that this is the best time to cherry pick because we seems to be overwhelmed with problems everywhere. Just personal opinion. |

One-year top losers portfolio still winning
By TEH HOOI LING WORDS can't quite begin to describe what a week we have had for the portfolios we track. First, the worst nightmare of any contrarian investor became a reality when Excel Machine was suspended and put under judicial management. So we assume that the entire sum put into the stock has now gone down the drain. Despite the 100 per cent loss in Excel Machine, the two portfolios which hold the stock put up a jaw-dropping performance - up 55 per cent and 67 per cent respectively! They, of course, have the other 'dogs' in their portfolios to thank. The one-year top losers portfolio now stands at $250,471, up $100,471 from its dummy capital of $150,000. The $10,000 used to buy 500,000 shares of Excel Machine at two cents each has vaporised. But the loss is more than made up by the four-fold jump in United Fiber System to 13 cents, from the average cost of just 3.2 cents. In other words, the $10,000 invested in the counter was worth some $40,000 at yesterday's closing price. Inno Pac and PDC also doubled in price, while L&M is up 200 per cent. Similarly, in the lowest price-to-book portfolio the $10,000 loss in Excel Machine is more than compensated by the surge in United Fiber. The portfolio stands at $232,101, up $82,101 from the dummy capital of $150,000. Other stocks which have contributed significantly to the performance of this portfolio include Powermatic, Sin Soon Huat and Yong Nam. Excluding Excel Machine, the average appreciation of the 13 stocks in the portfolio is 65 per cent. The lowest forward price-earnings portfolio, which has thus far been languishing, has also sprinted to third position. It is up $24,341 or 16.2 per cent to $174,341. The turbo-charged performances of Global Tech, Xpress Holdings, Asti and Cycle & Carriage have allowed the portfolio to overtake the analysts' upgrades portfolio. The analysts' upgrades portfolio has been performing decently. It is up nearly $10,000 or 6.6 per cent from the dummy capital of $150,000. Due to the rebalancing last week, it managed to avoid the heavy losses of People's Food. Its performance this week was lifted largely by Cheung Woh Tech and SPH. Meanwhile the one-year top-winners portfolio is anything but winning. It is only $901 above water, or up 0.6 per cent. |

TTSH nurse dies from Sars, no new cases found
A 44-year-old nurse and mother of three died from Sars in Singapore on Sunday, raising the death toll here to 28 but no new infections were reported over the weekend, a statement from the Ministry of Health said. The last Sars case to be found in the general community was on April 27. If there are no new cases in the general community by May 18, the government and the World Health Organization will declare the outbreak here under control. -- AP |

A global perspective from a European fund manager:
Sector Story Cyclical have dominated the recent equity rally, with strong gains in a number of technology, financial and consumer stocks. While the consensus view seems to be is that the global economy has passed through its soft patch, evidence suggests activity is more likely to weaken than strengthen as the year progresses. Which means we are likely to see an aggressive rotation from high to low beta stocks at some point in the near future. Sectors like consumer staples and health will do well in this environment, while technology and consumer discretionary stocks are likely to suffer. |
